Freja Näsman – Domingo Esteso Model

This flamenco guitar was handcrafted by luthier Freja Näsman, who completed a six-month apprenticeship at Casa Guitarra. During her time here, we built four guitars together, along with two other traditional stringed instruments, with a strong focus on traditional Spanish construction methods and historical guitar making.

After completing her apprenticeship, Freja returned to Sweden to finish her studies at the University of Instrument Making. As her graduation project, she built two guitars based on the knowledge and experience gained during her time at Casa Guitarra. This instrument is one of those two guitars.

The guitar is a faithful replica of an original Domingo Esteso from my personal collection, carefully following the dimensions, construction, and traditional methods of the original instrument.

Built entirely from solid wood, it features a spruce top, cypress back and sides, a cedar neck, an ebony fingerboard, and traditional ebony tuning pegs. The entire guitar is assembled using animal hide glue and finished with a hand-applied French polish, staying true to traditional Spanish craftsmanship.

The result is a lively and responsive flamenco guitar with beautiful projection, excellent balance, and an authentic old Spanish character. It captures the spirit of the original Domingo Esteso while showcasing Freja's craftsmanship as a newly graduated professional luthier.

About Domingo Esteso

Domingo Esteso was one of the most influential Spanish guitar makers of the 20th century. After working in the workshop of Manuel Ramírez, he established his own workshop in Madrid, where he built instruments that became a benchmark for traditional Spanish flamenco and classical guitars.

His guitars are celebrated for their light construction, quick response, and unmistakable flamenco sound. Esteso's work inspired generations of luthiers, including the Conde family, who continued building guitars in his workshop after his death. Alongside Santos Hernández, Domingo Esteso helped shape the sound and tradition of the golden age of Spanish guitar making.
